Slow Food Potawatomi co-hosted two screenings of the movie "The Real Dirt on Farmer John" with Schuler Books the first week of June. Both (free!) screenings had about 20 attendees, as well as gobs of fresh popcorn. The movie itself was an interesting tale of an interesting man. Farmer John is the owner of his small family farm in Illinois, which he now runs as a successfull CSA. However, it took a long time to get to that point, and the movie weaves the story of his life all the way from his idyllic childhood, through his hippie college years and on to the early eighties when he had to sell off most of the farm and all of his equipment. A funny, unconventional farmer, the movie was very enjoyable with many laughs heard throughout the screening. I myself fell in love with his mother and her deep love and suppport of her son.
The partnership with Schulers worked out very well...there were lots of people who had never heard of Slow Food before, so it was a good opportunity to spread the word to new people. Hopefully we can do this again!
